Fastest growing businesses belong to the so-called “sharing economy.” Almost limitless communication capabilities have influenced all the spheres of life. In this personal project, I’m sharing the impact of communication technologies on my life and aim to open up the discussion about their limitations in a broader context.

Typeface

ZXX typeface is played out throughout the book in headings, chapter markers, and navigation. It is designed to obfuscate the meaning of the written characters for OCR software and machine intelligence. ZXX is a hero of Part 2 of the book that provides a deeper context for its usage.

Knockout is used for body copy and secondary narrative. One of my favorite typefaces for its versatility — it has 32 weights that differ from very condensed to very expanded and from hairline to black. I picked a slightly extended version (HTF32) for body copy as it reads better over various backgrounds and a condensed version (HTF31) for secondary narrative as it has to fit in a tight space.

Color palette

Clean, simple versatile, yet powerful color combination lets the chapter content to shine while establishing the right tone for different chapters.

Layout

The book is structured around two parallel narratives. One provides a personal and inside view on a given subject (main copy), while the other focuses on the relevant facts and meant to be educational (comments blocks). Some pages feature quotes or image captions.

Navigation

Instead of traditional pagination, I imagined a book as a single piece with a loading bar underneath. Something that we used to experience on the web but rarely in print, effectively intertwining the two mediums. Staying true to the vernacular of the personal diary, the pages also feature stamped date and time, as well as the status of the event described on a spread.
